Good weekly hold

Seventh Son dropped 69% from Sunday to earn $30,380 on Monday. This was down a large 65% from Monday last week. The daily hold however, was smaller than last weekend and fairly respectable amongst other films.

On Tuesday, it increased an unnaturally massive 45% to earn $44,030. It is unclear what caused this massive increase; the next largest daily hold amongst all films was 34%! It was down 59% from last week. SS has earned $16.8 million so far.

SS falls hard in 4th showing

After losing another 680 cinemas (67% of them), Seventh Son earned just $322,085 in its 4th weekend. It dropped 67% from last weekend; the only good news is that it achieved exactly the same per-theatre average to last weekend ($950). It has earned a weak $16.7 million so far and will only be showing in theatres for a few more weeks, meaning that it will close below $18 million.

International

SS's international total stands at $86.4 million. According to Universal, it opened well in Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden this weekend. The fantasy epic has 8 more territories to be released in. It will open in five of them this weekend: Australia, Austria, Germany, New Zealand and Venezuela. It should pass $90 million internationally next weekend. It's worldwide total stands at $103.1 million against a budget of $95 million.

3rd weekend misses $1 million

Seventh Son did even worse than expected this weekend. After losing a massive 1,855 theatres, it earned just $967,700 over the three days which is down an awful 77% from last weekend. The theatre drop was so great, that instead of earnings increasing from Thursday to Friday, they actually decreased by 11%.

Through the week so far, it's actually held up fairly well. It experienced a solid 70% decrease from Sunday to Monday ($86.5k), before increasing 24% on Tuesday to gross $107k. On Wednesday it decreased 24% to earn $81k, which was a very good hold amongst wide releases.

It has earned just $16.3 million in 20 days and will ultimately finish with around $17 million. This weekend it'll probably experience another steep drop to earn about $0.3 million.

International

Seventh Son opened in third place in Italy at the weekend with $942k. This is neither a good nor bad figure. It still has 13 markets to expand to by the end of March. SS has earned $85.2 million internationally and $101.5 million worldwide.

Large Theatre Drop

Seventh Son earned $0.287 million on Wednesday which was down a respectable 35% from last Wednesday. It decreased 5% on Thursday to earn $0.273 million; while this was down just 32% from last Thursday, it was a poor daily hold amongst wide releases.

SS earned $5.8 million in its second week which is a good decline of 37% from its opening weekend. In comparison Jupiter Ascending (also released last weekend) fell a much larger 45% in its second week. SS has earned $15.08 million so far.

Despite SS's initial holding power, it looks like there's little chance of it passing the $20 million mark. It's theatre count is being reduced from 2,874 to just 1,021 this weekend, which represents a massive 65% drop. This means that it will barely make $1 million over the next three days. It will finish it's disappointing run with just $17 million.

Respectable Tuesday gross

Seventh Son declined a very respectable 42% from Monday to earn just over $0.4 million on Tuesday. This daily hold was fairly typical among wide releases. It was down a solid 39% from last Tuesday and should finish the week with almost $6 million for a weekly drop of about 37%. With three new wide releases this weekend, the remainder of SS's box office performance largely depends on how many screens it loses over the coming weeks. Although it depends on the number of theatres that drop it, SS probably won't earn anything over $2 million this weekend.

$4.84 million holiday weekend

BoxOfficeMojo.com reports that Seventh Son earned $4.84 million over the four day holiday weekend. It earned $0.69 million on Monday which was down 44% from Sunday's $1.22 million; this shows that that SS is surprisingly skewing towards older audiences than younger audiences. The actual for the three day weekend came in at $4.15 million.

Great 2nd weekend hold

Seventh Son earned $4.15 million over the weekend, which represents a decline of just 42% from last weekend. Admittedly, it did receive a boost from Valentine's Day but there's no denying that's its showing stronger holding power than previous young adult flops such as The Host, Beautiful Creatures, and Vampire Academy which all fell over 50% in their second weekends.

SS increased a slightly disappointing 111% from Thursday to Friday to gross $848,000. This led many to believe that it would earn just $3 million over the three day weekend (an awful 58% decline from last weekend) and $3.5 million over the four days. However, SS along with most other films received a stronger than expected boost on Valentine's Day, meaning that it earned significantly more this weekend than expected. It increased a very strong 148% from Friday, to earn $2.1 million on Saturday. This daily percentage increase was actually the 2nd best hold amongst wide releases. It is estimated to fall 43% to earn $1.2 million on Sunday.

Of the three new major films released last weekend (SS, Jupiter Ascending, and SpongeBob), SS surprisingly had the best 2nd weekend hold, which is very odd considering that Presidents' Day weekend should've given SpongeBob an extra boost. However, it's obviously not all good news, as the fantasy epic has earned just $13.4 million so far, though it may yet reach $20 million by the end of its run. It will come close to earning $5 million over the four day holiday frame.

$9.3 million in first week

In its first 7 days, Seventh Son has earned just $9.27 million. This is very disappointing given its budget of about $100 million and it's the latest in a long line of young adult fantasy flops in the US. However, it's international earnings are solid, which sets it apart from the rest. Over the three day weekend it should earn between $3.5 and $4 million, and up to $4.6 million over the four days.

Solid Tuesday

Seventh Son increased a solid 21% from Monday to earn $0.66 million on Tuesday. It's total currently stands at a disappointing $8.4 million. It should hold up fairly well over the upcoming holiday weekend though.

Tuesday, 10 February 2015

Over half a million on Monday

Seventh Son declined 72% from Sunday to earn $0.546 million at the box office on Monday. This daily drop was typical amongst wide releases. It should aim to earn $4 million this weekend, and $5 million over the four day frame.

Sunday, 8 February 2015

SS bombs with $7.2 million

Seventh Son earned just $7.2 million at the box office this weekend. This is below the $8.7 million opening in Russia and the $16 million opening in China, which is a very odd thing to happen to an American film. It earned $2.3 million on Friday, increased 31% on Saturday to $3 million, and fell 36% to $1.9 million on Sunday. This placed the film's opening weekend to Friday ratio at a very respectable 3.16. This is is a good sign as it suggests that the film is not significantly front-loaded. Depending on how well it holds up in the coming weeks, SS may scrape past the $20 million mark.

International

SS's international total now stands at a solid $83.3 million. It still has 15 markets left to open in, including four major ones: UK, Germany, Australia, and Brazil. It has earned over $90 million worldwide and will pass $100 million soon.

Disappointing Opening

There's no other way to say this: Seventh Son is a massive flop in America. On its opening day it earned $2.3 million, which is awful. This puts it on track to miss $7 million over the weekend. If it drops below $4 million next weekend, there's no way that it'll reach $20 million by the end of its run.

Forecast
Opening weekend: $6.7 million
Opening week: $8.8 million
2nd weekend: $4 million
Eventual total: $18 million
International: $150 million
Worldwide: $170 million

$10 million weekend forecast

Seventh Son earned $295k from late Thursday night showings, which puts it on track for a weekend of $10 million. The long delayed fantasy is set to massively underperform in America, however this shouldn't be problem in the overall picture as it has done solid business so far overseas. If it fails to hold up well in America over the coming weeks, then it's likely that it may not pass its $28 million total in China, which would be odd indeed. Over its entire run, SS won't earn more than $30 million.

Not another Fantasy Flop!

Seventh Son has defyed all the odds by avoiding becoming another major young adult flop at the box office. The troubled production pushed back release dates several times to that it arrives in America next Friday, a full two years after its original February 2013 release date. This lead many to believe that the fantasy epic would flop at the box office, like so many other attempts at turning young adult books into successful film franchises. However, that is not the case for Seventh Son:

It has been gradually been building up momentum overseas before it's February 6th release in the US. It flopped in France with a $1.2 million opening weekend in December, which was a very bad sign, however it has done very well in the majority of the international markets that it has since opened in. The only other place that has underwhelmed is Sapin where it opened in fifth place with $1.2 million. Everywhere else, it has overperformed in. In Russia, it took in a very strong $8.7 million in its first weekend and it's total currently stands at $15.5 million there. In China it opened to a solid $16 million for a $26 million total. It also opened well in Mexico with $2.9 million, and has opened at no.1 in most of its other minor territories; including most recently in India, where it is very rare for a US films to reach the top position there.

It's international total stands at $82 million. It should hope to earn at least $150 million by the end of its run as it still has major markets such as the UK, Australia and Brazil in March.

When Seventh Son opens in the US, it's still unclear if it can earn a significant amount there. BoxOffice.com predicted a $8 weekend for a $19 million total. However this prediction was made many months ago, so considering the numbers it's been earning overseas it should earn considerably more. A $15-20 million opening weekend for a $50+ million cume seems likely at the moment.
